Rove Hotels is rewarding customers who hand in their plastic bottles for recycling at The Daily restaurants across Dubai.

Each plastic bottle can be exchanged for AED1 of dining credit, up to a maximum of AED250, to fund their next meal at Rove, a statement said.

The initiative follows recent statistics published by Euromonitor International that a million plastic bottles are purchased around the world every minute, a figure that will increase by another 20 percent by 2021.Rove Hotels said the bottles collected are sent to authorised and licensed recycling specialists in the UAE, where the plastic is processed to make a variety of useful products such as buckets, tubs and mats.Paul Bridger, corporate director of operations at Rove Hotels, said: “Rove Hotels is trying to reduce its environmental impact and encourage the habit of recycling in the community. We hope that beyond this programme, we can spark a collective feeling of responsibility so that the public, our Rovers, as well as our team adapt a more proactive approach at home and utilise recycling points in their areas.”Natalie Banks, manager of Azraq, a non-profit marine conservation organisation registered with the Community Development Authority in the UAE, added: “With the typical resident in the United Arab Emirates using approximately 450 plastic water bottles annually, it is great to see Rove Hotels focus on recycling these plastic bottles in addition to already removing plastic straws from their hotels.

“Initiatives like this are an important step in reducing plastic waste and marine debris which are known to have terrible consequences to marine environments and are proving to also be harmful to human health and tourismopportunities.”Customers can take their plastic bottles to The Daily outlets at Rove Hotels locations in Dubai Marina, City Centre, Trade Centre and Healthcare City.
