Passengers flying out of Dubai International Airport will have to pay extra for baggage which require manual handling, it was confirmed on Wednesday.
A new fee has been introduced by air services provider dnata, part of the Emirates Group, for manual handling of baggage that does not conform to standard size and weight.
The company did not disclose what the extra charges are although Air India has reportedly put the fee at AED45 per piece of baggage.
A dnata spokesperson said: “dnata has updated its standard ground handling terms and conditions with carriers, to cover the additional manual handling services for “out of gauge” baggage – a policy that is now being strictly enforced at Dubai International Airport.
“Carriers may decide to ask dnata to collect associated charges directly from their passengers. Passengers should check their carrier’s website for further details.”
Out of gauge (OOG) baggage may include TVs, flat panel displays and other items that can damage or slow down the baggage system.
Dnata is understood to have had to put in place additional manpower to handle OOG baggage.
