As part of the Marine Transport Master Plan 2020-2030, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched two marine transport lines connecting the city’s latest tourist destinations and residential communities with a sea view.
The first line operates between the Bluewaters Island and the Marina, on all weekdays from 16:50 to 23:25 and from 16:10 to 23:45 on weekends. The fare is set at AED5.
The second line connects the residential areas at the Dubai Creek Marina with Dubai Festival City during weekends from 16:00 pm to 23:55, with a tariff of AED2.
This move seeks to measure up to the objectives of Dubai and the RTA’s strategic goals to improve the wellbeing of residents.
The marine transport services consist of the Dubai Ferry, abras, and the water taxi on demand. Coordination is in hand with the developer to link Souk Al Marfa on Deira Island with Dubai Creek through the ferry and traditional abras. The new line is scheduled for operation in the first quarter of this year.
Last April, RTA announced that it is set to expand the marine transport network by 188 percent to cover 158 kilometres, and that the number of scheduled passenger lines will see a 400 percent increase to 35 lines, under Dubai’s 2030 Strategic Plan.
Under the plan, the marine transit fleet will be enlarged by 32 percent to reach 258 means of shipping and the number of marine transport stations would see a 65 percent rise to encompass 79 stations by 2030.
Public transport is popular in Dubai with RTA recently announcing that 461 million riders used public transport, shared transport and taxis in Dubai in 2021, a figure which includes metro, tram, public buses, marine transport and taxis riders. This is a 33 percent increase from 2020.
