An oil tanker was attacked by a projectile off Oman on Tuesday night. Minor damage to the hull, was reported with no injuries or spillage of The Pacific Zircon, which was carrying diesel, according to media reports.
The tanker, which Sky News reports as being owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer, was attacked on Tuesday by the projectile roughly 150 miles from the Omani coast at about 7.30 PM local time on Tuesday, according to a statement from Eastern Pacific Shipping, which owns the tanker.
“There are no reports of injuries or pollution,” Singapore-based Eastern Pacific said adding that “all crew are safe and accounted for. There is some minor damage to the vessel’s hull but no spillage of cargo or water ingress.”
The Associated Press earlier reported that the ship was hit by a drone, citing an unidentified defense official.
According to ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, The Pacific Zircon was last seen signaling its position in the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday evening.
“The tanker loaded at Kuwait’s Mina Abdullah Port on November 6 and sailed for Sohar in Oman. It moored at the Omani port and appeared to deliver a small amount of fuel before sailing away and signally Buenos Aires on November 14,” Bloomberg reported.
The report also added that the US Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, and the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations, which monitors shipping in the region, said they were aware of a incident in the Gulf of Oman.
