Toll gates similar to those already operating in Dubai will be launched in Abu Dhabi in October.

All vehicles registered in Abu Dhabi before October 15 will be automatically registered for the emirate’s new toll system without any charges, it has been announced.

Users will receive a text message on the mobile number as registered with Abu Dhabi Police, along with the account details, said the Department of Transport – Abu Dhabi (DoT).

Any vehicle that is registered in Abu Dhabi after October 15, the launch day of the toll gates, will have to pay a registration fee of AED100 per vehicle – AED50 registration fee and AED50 to be credited to the account.

For non-Abu Dhabi registered vehicle owners, the same registration fee of AED100 per vehicle will apply, a statement said.

It added that vehicle owners crossing any toll gate with a non-registered vehicle will be granted a ten working days’ grace period to register the vehicle after which they will be fined – AED100 for the first day, AED200 for the second day, and AED400 for the third and subsequent days, up to a maximum of AED10,000.

The emirate’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) will collect a toll as each vehicle crosses any of the four toll gates on Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge, Al Maqtaa Bridge and Mussafah Bridge.

The peak hours toll fee will be AED4 for every pass from Saturday to Thursday (7-9am and 5-7pm). During off-peak hours, on Fridays, and during public holidays, the toll fee will be AED2 for every pass. The toll collection system is operational 24/7, with a daily maximum fee of AED16 per vehicle.

Electric vehicles are exempt from the charges over a period of two years from the launch of the toll system, in order to preserve the environment and encourage sustainable living in the emirate.
