The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi has ruled out installing tollgates in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
Speculation had mounted after it was announced last month that a tollgate system is to be installed at the entrances to Abu Dhabi, that Al Ain and Al Dhafra region would be next.
However, Eng Ibrahim Serhan Al Hamoudi, acting chief executive officer of land transport at DoT, told Gulf Today: “Abu Dhabi’s new tollgate system is to solve the traffic jams occurring in the city of Abu Dhabi, while Al Ain city and Al Dhafra region have no traffic jam problems requiring a tollgate system, so they are outside the plan now.
“It will be a unified system based on a sophisticated electronic payment mechanism without the need to stop to pay fees, and when it is required in Al Ain or Al Dhafra, the same system, which is going to start next October at the major bridges of Abu Dhabi, will be implemented.”
In July, the DoT said the tollgate systems will be installed on Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge, Al Maqtaa Bridge and Mussafah Bridge.
Electric vehicles are exempt from the charges over a period of two years from the launch of the toll system, in order to preserve the environment and encourage sustainable living in the emirate.
