Passengers flying from Dubai International Airport (DXB) will soon have access to a luggage shipping service that will help them avoid having to pay excess baggage fees, according to an invitation to tenders issued by Dubai Airports on Monday.
In a statement sent to Arabian Business, the airport said it is currently inviting tenders from “reputable luggage shipping services” for two units, both located in the departure side area of DXB’s Terminal 1.
The units will also provide courier and document shipping services.
According to the invitation for tender, bids must be submitted by September 30.
To be eligible to bid, firms must have experience in airports or high football hubs, at least three outlets in the UAE or internationally, a minimum annual turnover of at least AED 10 million, as well as three years of experience in baggage-related, postal and shipping services in the UAE or abroad.
A total of 88.2 million passengers transited through the airport in 2017. An estimated 90.2 million passengers are expected by the end of 2018.
Around the world, a number of airports, airlines and companies provide luggage shipping services to passengers who hope to avoid excess fees or having to wait to collect their bags.
American Airlines, for example, offers same day luggage delivery within 100 miles of US domestic airports and several international destinations, in which bags are fitted with a special indicator and taken to their final destination within 4 to 6 hours of arrival.
