Yahsat says Thuraya 3 services to remain ‘significantly diminshed’

Plans for partial recovery of services underway after the company reported an unexpected payload anomaly on Monday

Yahsat says services will “remain significantly diminished” for a prolonged period after Monday’s unexpected payload anomaly that took place on the Thuraya 3 (T3) satellite.

The anomaly caused an ongoing service outage of both voice and packet services.

T3 is in geostationary orbit at a longitude of 98.5° E and provides L-band mobile satellite services predominantly over South and East Asia and the Pacific region.

In a filing with Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX), Yahsat said: “Following implementation of standard incident management procedures, investigation of the incident in conjunction with the satellite manufacturer and exhaustion of most recovery options, we now expect services to remain significantly diminished for a prolonged period in a majority of the geographies affected.

“Thuraya is working on recovering services in some markets in the next few days and further geographies in the coming weeks.

“The satellite remains safe and under control and a financial impact assessment has been initiated, the results of which will be communicated to the market as required.”
