Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) said on Tuesday it is investigating claims by a hacker group that it has stolen a massive trove of sensitive corporate data from the chip company.

In a statement, the company confirmed it is “aware of a cybercriminal organisation claiming to be in possession of stolen AMD data.”

The company said it is “working closely with law enforcement officials and a third-party hosting partner to investigate the claim and the significance of the data.”

The hacking group, calling itself “Intelbroker,” posted on an online cybercrime forum claiming to have breached AMD systems, according to media reports.

“Today, I’m selling the AMD.com data breach. Thanks for reading and enjoy!,” the threat actor said in a post on the forum.

Hacker claims stolen AMD data contains sensitive information

Intelbroker alleges the stolen data includes details on future AMD products, employee records, customer databases, financial information, source code and other confidential material.

“In June 2024, AMD, a large computing company suffered a data breach. Compromised data: Future AMD products, Spec sheets, employee databases, customer databases, property files, ROMs, source code, firmware and finances,” Intelbroker wrote in the forum post.

According to a screenshot of the post shared by tech news outlet Bleeping Computer, the hacker did not disclose a price for the information.

Intelbroker is a notorious hacking group that has been behind several high-profile data breaches. In 2023, it claimed responsibility for breaching DC Health Link, an Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange for Washington DC residents. The incident exposed sensitive personal data of members of the US House of Representatives and congressional staffers, prompting a congressional hearing.

More recently, Intelbroker said it hacked the Europol Platform for Experts (EPE), a web portal used by international law enforcement agencies across Europe to share confidential information and intelligence. The breach raised serious concerns about the security of cross-border police data sharing systems.

The US-based chipmaker is one of the world’s leading makers of computer processors and graphics chips. A major data leak could potentially give competitors insight into its product roadmap and R&D efforts.
