UAE telcos win more freedom to launch new products

Telecoms regulators says Etisalat, Du will be able to go straight to market without regulatory approval

UAE telcos Etisalat and Du will be allow to go straight to market with new pre-paid products without waiting for regulatory approval, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced the move on day three of the GITEX Technology Week.

The TRA said in comments published by news agency WAM that it will expedite the process of new products entering the UAE ICT market and also improve the quality of services provided by Etisalat and du to consumers, within the current competition regulatory framework.

The TRA stressed that it will still monitor all product after launch to ensure they still comply with the competition framework currently in place in the country.

Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA director-general, said: “The TRA will definitely keep monitoring all products and packages after their release in the market to ensure that they comply with the regulatory framework, and will interfere in case of any violation.

“Affording licensees the ability to go straight to market with their products is a positive step forward that will encourage Etisalat and du to create more attractive mobile packages for UAE consumers,” he added.

According to statistics released on the official TRA website, as of July 2013, there are nearly 15 million active mobile subscriptions in the UAE, almost 2 million post-paid subscriptions and a further 13 million pre-paid mobile subscriptions.

Etisalat currently holds 52.6 percent market share in the UAE telecoms market with Du holding 47.4 percent.
