Sony promises 3D TV in Gulf this year

Sony shows off 3D-compatible televisions, Blu-ray disc players and home theatre systems.

Japanese electronics giant Sony has shifted up a gear in a bid to bring a suite of 3D-compatible products to Middle Eastern households in 2010.

The firm showcased a number of products in Dubai today, including 3D-compatible Bravia LCD televisions, Blu-ray disc players and home theatre systems.

Also in the pipeline are firmware updates for the hugely popular Playstation 3 console, allowing gamers to play ‘3D steroscopic’ games.

In addition, Sony revealed that it is working closely with cable television providers like Al-Jazeera, Orbit Showtime and E-vision to bring 3D content to Middle Eastern homes this year.

“Today, we have brought the latest 3D experience for you to enjoy. For Sony, 3D is strategically very important, and we are committed to lead the 3D industry,” said Hiroyasu Sugiyama, general manager of Sony’s 3D strategy office.

“In the 3D space, Sony is very uniquely positioned compared to other consumer electronics makers because we are not only going to sell 3D compatible consumer hardware but also ensure there is affluent variety of 3D content that consumers can enjoy.”

During 2010, the firm will be filming major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup and the Sony Open in Hawaii in 3D. The resulting content will be made available to consumers via various channels.
