Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) starts on Monday and excitement is building over what the tech giant might unveil.

The annual event is known for launching the latest products, software and innovations from Apple to the tech world and consumers.

At the opening keynote speech, there is speculation that Apple will officially unveil updates to its latest operating platform iOS 16, among other rumours circulating the developer community.

The iOS (Apple’s operating system) update could include a multitasking interface that makes it easier to switch between tasks, according to the online community. There is also speculation about the launch of a new redesigned MacBook Air.

There were initially rumours of a new Apple AR/VR headset to be launched but these have died down on expectations this could be delayed because of supply chain disruptions.

WWDC is a week-long event that also includes the Apple Design Awards and hundreds of developer sessions.

For the last two years the conference has been held online due to Covid-19, but WWDC 2022 will include a small in-person session in addition to the online options.

“At its heart, WWDC has always been a forum to create connection and build community,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise and Education Marketing.

“In that spirit, WWDC22 invites developers from around the world to come together to explore how to bring their best ideas to life and push the envelope of what’s possible. We love connecting with our developers, and we hope all of our participants come away feeling energised by their experience.”

Developers can sign up for sessions during the week-long event.

The first-ever WWDC was held in 1983 but it wasn’t until 2002 that Apple started using the conference as a major launchpad for new products.

At last year’s event, Apple gave a first look at its new iOS 15 software, its new macOS Monterey and improvements to FaceTime.
