The official opening of the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) is scheduled to take place on March 16th, 2009.
The research and development hub, which began operations in 2004, will be inaugurated by HH The Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, chairperson of Qatar Foundation.
More than $800 million has been invested by Qatar Foundation and its 21 partner organisations in QSTP, which is now a base for 21 organisations in the energy, environment, health sciences and ICT sectors.
1,200 prominent guests from related fields are also expected to attend the opening ceremony, including Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson, chief executive of GE, Jeff Immelt, and executive director for gas and power at Shell, Linda Cook.
QSTP is located at Qatar Foundation’s Education City, which is home to several international universities such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgetown and Texas A&M.
“Technology innovation demands a clear strategy and strong partnership between committed companies, the best universities and visionary government. With those foundations firmly in place, we are now proud to celebrate as our applied research programs come to life at QSTP,” said Tidu Maini, executive chairman of QSTP.
“That research will ultimately become a cornerstone of Qatar’s legacy of scientific achievement and wealth creation,” added Maini.
