Tech giant Dell has updated its work from home policy, restricting opportunities for promotion and internal job changes for employees who do not work from an office, according to a report by Business Insider.
The new rules will reportedly come into effect in May and were communicated to staff in a memo, the report said.
Dell confirmed to Ars Technica that hybrid staff, must come into approved offices for at least 39 days per quarter. Those who do not will not “be considered for promotion, or be able to change roles.”
Dell remote working employees need consider trade-offs, says memo
However, according to the Business Insider report, the memo stated that “for remote team members, it is important to understand the trade-offs: Career advancement, including applying to new roles in the company, will require a team member to reclassify as hybrid onsite.”
An anonymous employee reportedly raised concerns about being “forced into a position where either we’re going to be staying as the low man on the totem pole, first on the chopping block when it comes to workforce reduction, or we can be hybrid.” Others worry the changes could disproportionately impact women.
Over 10 years ago, Dell had begun allowing remote working one day per week for 65 percent of staff. An employee of 10 years said “10 to 15 percent of every team was remote” prior to the pandemic.
However, Dell has now said that “in today’s global technology revolution, we believe in-person connections paired with a flexible approach are critical to drive innovation and value differentiation.”
