Microsoft
is using its time at Gitex Shopper 2010 to promote its forthcoming ‘Kinect’
motion tracking system.

‘Kinect’
previously known as ‘Project Natal’ is a webcam-style add-on for the Xbox 360
console that allows users to interact with games and other content using body
motion and gestures, as well as spoken commands.

The
upgrade can be fitted to any Xbox 360 gaming console and is able to track
movements even when the gamer is wearing traditional clothing such as the
‘dishdasha’ and ‘abaiya’.

Armagan
Demir, head of entertainment and devices division, Microsoft Gulf, said the
device uses full-body tracking to engage users.

“[It]
allows the sensor to recognise your body and mirror your movements in the game,
making you the controller. Some key features include controlling your Xbox 360
with a single gesture or wave of the hand, getting off the couch and into the
game by using your body as the controller,” he said.

Game
developers are already working on a variety of Kinect compatible titles, with a
number scheduled to launch alongside the device when it goes on sale in
November.
