Creating a Windows Vista (or XP) password reset disk can be a real lifesaver when you forget your account password. With it, you can easily reset your password and log into your system without any niggles. So be proactive and create a password disk right now with our super-quick guide.
Step 1
Click on Start/Control Panel. Now double-click on the ‘User Accounts and Family Safety’ link, followed by the ‘User Accounts’ icon. Now select the ‘Create a Password Reset Disk’ option that appears in the left task pane. The Forgotten Password Wizard will now appear. Step 2
You’ll now be prompted to connect your flash drive. In the ‘I want to create a password key disk in the following drive:’ drop-down box, choose the drive to create a password reset disk on. Once you’re done, click the ‘Next’ button to continue.
Step 3
With your flash drive still connected, enter your present user account password in the text box and click the ‘Next’ button once again. Your password reset disk will now be created in a few seconds. Once this is done, simply click Next and you’ll have a new password reset disk. Step 4
Your password reset disk will be created within a few seconds. When the progress indicator shows 100% complete, click Next. You’ll now be taken to the final Wizard screen. If the progress bar is stuck for any reason, simply hit ‘Back’ and try again. Step 5
Now disconnect the flash drive from your machine, label it ‘Reset Disk’ or whatever you wish and store it in a secure location, as anyone can use the disk to reset the password and gain access to your computer. Forgotten your password?
1. Connect the flash drive you used to create the reset disk, and boot Windows Vista as usual
2. At the login prompt, hit ‘Reset Password’ and click Next in the Reset Password Wizard window
3. On the next screen, select the drive letter next to ‘The password key disk is in the following drive list’ and hit Next
4. At the next screen type a new password, and type it again in the confirm field. Also, type a hint that will remind you of the password
5. Click ‘Next’ then ‘Finish’ to close the Wizard
6. Logon to Vista with the new password. That’s all folks!
