Elon Musk has been voted out as the chief executive officer of Twitten Inc. following a poll he had put up on Sunday.
The poll read: “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.”
The poll came after Twitter announced on Sunday it would ban accounts used to promote other accounts on other specific social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Mastodon.
“We recognise that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter,” Twitter Support tweeted.
“Specifically, we will remove accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content that contains links or usernames for the following platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.”
It will allow cross-posting content from any social media platform. “Posting links or usernames to social media platforms not listed above are also not in violation of this policy,” it added.
Third-party link aggregators such as linktr.ee and lnk.bio are also prohibited. Listing a social media handle without a URL is not allowed.
Twitter said a first violation of this policy may range from requiring deletion of a tweet to temporarily locking an account. The company said that an account may be suspended if the violation is in the bio or account name. Subsequent breaches of the policy could lead to permanent suspension.
Musk later tweeted that the new “policy will be adjusted to suspending accounts only when primary purpose is the promotion of competitors, which essentially falls under the no spam rule”.
Following the poll, Musk added in another tweet: “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”
Musk led Twitter Inc. after buying the social-media platform in a $44 billion deal valued in October, however, his ownership resulted in a turbulent start.
Advertisers paused spending, mass layoffs and resignations, and content-moderation were some of the changes, Musk brought into effect.
However, last week, Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists. Musk said on Saturday that Twitter would reinstate the accounts.
