Another day, and another Twitter announcement by Elon Musk.

The CEO tweeted on Tuesday that the social media company will allow voice and video between anyone on the platform, and is going to provide encryption of direct message (DM) that is so secure that even “I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head”.

Encrypted direct messages will be available on Twitter from today (Wednesday).

Musk tweeted: “With latest version of app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just most recent) and use any emoji reaction.

“Release of encrypted DMs V1.0 should happen tomorrow. This will grow in sophistication rapidly. The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head.

“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number.”

Encryption and features like integrated payment are all part of Musk’s plan for ‘Twitter 2.0’, which he called ‘The Everything App’. The call feature will help Twitter match the offerings of Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, which have similar features.

A day before, Musk had said that Twitter would soon enforce its inactive account policy and archive usernames and content of those who haven’t “used it for several years”.
