Dubai’s transport authority has unveiled two revolutionary initiatives at Gitex 2018 – an autonomous taxi and the introduction of the Nol Plus services.

In line with the UAE’s plan of using smart transportation systems for 25 percent of all personal trips by 2030, the autonomous public taxis are designed in partnership with Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World and equipped with top safety and security features.

“Taxi is one of the modes of transport that will be contributing to the vision and goal of Dubai,” said Khalid Al Awadhi, director of Automated Collections Systems Department of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

“This taxi will be tried and tested at Dubai Silicon Oasis before the end of this year. The idea is to prove the technology that was suited to the environment of Dubai to understand the gaps in terms of the infrastructure needed and also to develop the legislations that will be required to run such a system in the future in Dubai,” he added.

The RTA also revealed Nol Plus, the first loyalty program linked to the Nol card and works on a points basis.

“Today you can use the Nol card in taxi, parking, parks, and museums and also over 7000 shops in Dubai. For using the Nol card in any of these outlets, you will be getting points rewarded once you are registered for this loyalty program. For each dirham you spend using the Nol card, you will get one point,” said Awadhi.

He added that the RTA is giving an extra 500 point bonus for those registering in the Nol Plus portal at Gitex.
