Indian conglomerate Tata Group will open 100 exclusive stores across the country that will only sell Apple Inc products, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Monday, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.
The report said that the iPhone maker will partner with Tata Group’s Infiniti Retail, which runs the consumer electronics store chain Croma, to be an Apple-authorised reseller.
The stores will be set up at shopping malls, high-street and neighbourhood locations.
According to the report, Tata is in talks with premium malls and high streets and the lease terms include details of brands and stores that cannot be opened near these outlets, a retail consultant aware of the matter told the publication.
Two weeks before, the Economic Times also reported that Tata Group was in talks to buy Wistron Corp’s only manufacturing facility in India for up to $605 million.
India began manufacturing its iPhone SE in 2017, and has continued to assemble a number of iPhone models.
Apple, which opened its online store in India in 2020, had plans to open a flagship store in the country before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
