Iran’s car manufacturer IKCO said on Wednesday it was increasing production to 850,000 units during the current Iranian year, which started on March 21.
IKCO (Iran Khodro) CEO Javad Najmeddin it would produce about 100,000 more cars this year compared to last year, adding that it would start mass production of its second car, called the Runna.
Runna is based on the Peugeot 206, and is smaller than the IKCO Samand, Iran’s first domestic car.
The first Runnas should begin reaching Iranian customers in mid 2011, with exports to Turkey and other neighbouring countries to begin shortly after that.
Najmeddin said: “In the current year, the daily production of Peugeot 206 and Samand will exceed 1,200 and 1,000 units respectively.”
IKCO launched two new production plants in the provinces of Mazandaran and Fars last year and two other plants in Semnan and Azarbaijan provinces are planned.
The CEO said by 2025, Iran’s auto industry would be the fifth biggest among Asian countries and eleventh in the world, based on plans to produce three million cars, one third for export.
