GEMS World Academy cautioned parents regarding children drinking Prime Energy, noting that the drink could lead to a variety of health problems including “anxiety and even addiction.”
“I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of great concern that has recently come to our attention … We feel it is our responsibility to inform you about the potential dangers associated with [Prime],” Sahar Taheri, Director of PR & Communications at GEMS World Academy (GWA) said in a letter to parents.
Former boxing rivals Logan Paul and KSI, who now have more than 40 million YouTube followers between them have been marketing the drinks, with teenagers around the world, and in the UAE, flocking to supermarkets and delivery apps to purchase the drink often at eye-watering prices.
In the letter, Taheri warned that, “The excessive consumption of these drinks can lead to various health problems, including increased heart rate, high blood pressure, dehydration, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and even addiction.”
As a result, students will not be allowed to “buy or sell Prime or any other products on the Academy premises.”
This decision was taken as Prime Energy is “not suitable for people under the age of 18,” a fact that Taheri points out “is even mentioned on Prime’s own website.”
Prime has two different types of drinks in its product line, an energy drink and a sports drink called Prime Hydration. In contrast to Prime Energy, Prime Hydration “is suitable for children and is a hydration drink that is used for muscle recovery and replacing electrolytes,” according to Taheri.
It remains unclear if both Prime Energy and Prime Hydration will be banned on GWA premises.
The drink, which has been in short supply in most countries since it was launched last year, hit the shelves in the UAE in early 2023, which caused a stir among teenagers in the country. Aside from the relatively short apply outside the US, the demand for the product skyrocketed which made it even more scarce – with some parents already complaining over how “absurd” the product’s pricing has become.
