The Department of Economic Development in Dubai (DED) has confiscated 12 million fake mobile phones and accessories worth $89.10 million (AED327 million) in nine months, a news report said.
Among the products seized were 222,996 fake and refurbished handsets and 12.5 million accessories such as replacement batteries, chargers, headphones and screens, 7days.ae reported.
These goods were often sold in market stalls and on the streets.
“It was a workshop, inside a villa, that renewed old phones and sell them as if new. We raided it with the help of Dubai Police’s Anti-Economic Crime Department and seized more than 26,000 phones in addition to 1.3 million fake phone accessories,” Ibrahim Behzad, the Head of Intellectual Property Rights division at DED, told the newspaper.
Sellers of counterfeit goods face penalties.
