How Dubai Duty Free achieved over $2bn sales in 2018

Dubai Duty Free has announced total sales of AED7.35 billion ($2.01 billion) in 2018, a 4.3 percent rise over the previous year.

The airport retailer previously announced that it crossed the $2 billion milestone on December 29.

The five top selling categories for the year included liquor followed by perfumes, cigarettes, cosmetics and electronics, it added.

Sales of perfumes exceeded AED1.1 billion and contributed nearly 15 percent towards total sales while cosmetics recorded sales of AED762.4 million and electronics sales reached AED595.3 million with these two categories, up 21.7 percent and 8.8 percent year-on-year, respectively.

Sales of watches rose by 2.6 percent to AED531.5 million and accounted for 7.2 percent of annual sales while gold saw sales of AED489.8 million (US$134.21 million), accounting for 6.6 percent and confectionery recorded sales of AED475.8 million (6.5 percent).

Dubai Duty Free said sales in Departures rose by 6.1 percent to AED6.5 billion over the previous year and accounted for 88.3 percent of total 2018 sales.

The operation has also recorded a total of 25,507,998 sales transactions for the year with 68,755,388 pieces of merchandise sold.

Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman and CEO, said: “We are pleased to announce such a positive year in 2018, which marked our 35th anniversary and the crossing of the $2 billion mark. The entire team at Dubai Duty Free has worked hard to provide passengers with a first-class shopping experience at both Dubai International and Al Maktoum International.”

He added that Dubai Duty Free will continue to enhance its retail operation in 2019 while maintaining a busy events and promotional calendar.
