Since high school, his close friends knew that if there were someone to become successful in business that would be him.
It comes with no surprise that at only 27 years old he successfully started Washmen and turned it into UAE’s leading dry cleaning and laundry company.
After graduating in finance, Rami Shaar started a career in investment banking followed by a managerial position at Uber.
However, despite the high perks of a corporate career, the urge to pursue his own venture surfaced back all of a sudden.
One day, after an argument with a local laundry service, Rami realised there was a lot to fix in the laundry space: unreliable deliveries, inconsistency in quality, poor clothes treatment and low hygienic standards.
“That’s when the idea of Washmen crossed my mind. I told myself: if Uber changed transportation, why can’t I can change laundry?”
Shortly after, Rami and his co-founder Jad Halaoui joined the largest regional incubator. The Washmen pitch was so successful that the 27-year-old founders managed to raise $400,000 in seed investment in less than 30 days.
“If initially, Washmen was mainly focused on premium clothes (such as suits, high end shirts and expensive garments), we then introduced a new service line to capture a large portion of the laundry basket at home that was not secured by local laundry services,” said Shaar in a recent interview.
Based on this approach, Washmen launched ‘Wash Everything Bag’, a new service that can potentially disrupt the laundry market.
For a set price of AED49, customers can send out their gym clothes, linens and casual wear for cleaning.
Basically, customers can now sort out all their weekly laundry for less than a meal.
“We realised dry cleaning and pressing were not solving an everyday problem. We wanted to become part of our customers’ daily lives,” said Jad.
“We’ve created a specific facility to ensure that our new process is similar to washing at home: we split colours, wash them separately and more importantly, we don’t mix intimates with anybody else’s.”
