Twitter has launched on Wednesday “Twitter Circle.” a new way to share tweets with a smaller group on the platform.
With Twitter Circle, people will now have the flexibility to choose who can see and engage with their content on a tweet-by-tweet basis, thus enabling more intimate conversations and building closer connections with a smaller crowd.
Significantly, Twitter’s latest move comes in the wake of widespread unease among its users for being prosecuted or attracting unruly comments from unknown users for some of their posts, allegedly for being ‘hurting sentiments’ or offensive.
With the new feature, Twitter wants to ensure everyone on its platform has the choice, control, tools, and transparency to join the conversation with one another how and when they want.
“Giving people the option to share thoughts with a select group of followers helps make tweeting more accessible. This is true for brands that are new to Twitter or users that have millions of followers,” the company said.
The social media major said the new feature will be available on iOS, Android, and Twitter.com globally from Wednesday.
The new feature launch followed testing of its beta version in a small feedback group in May, the company said.
Up to 150 people can be added to a ‘Circle’, and this list can be adjusted at any time with no one notified of any changes made.
Before posting a tweet, people will see the option to share it with their circle or full followers list.
Tweets sent to one’s circle will appear with a green badge underneath them.
These Tweets cannot be re-tweeted or shared. Besides, all replies to circle tweets are private, even if the user’s account is public.
The company said it observed during the test of the new feature that it increased overall tweeting – both within and outside of circles – and also the engagement rate on circle tweets such as likes and replies.
The company said it would continue to observe how ‘Twitter Circle’ was working and explore ways to make it even better.
