Abu Dhabi-backed documentary ‘Free Solo’ wins 7 Emmy Awards

The film follows climber Alex Honnold’s attempt to become the first person to climb 3,000 foot high vertical rock El Capitan

Critically-acclaimed film ‘Free Solo’, which was co-produced by Abu Dhabi-based Image Nation through its joint venture with Parkes/MacDonald Productions, has won seven Creative Arts Emmy Awards, adding to a series of 25 honours including a BAFTA and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, reported state news agency WAM.

The documentary presented by National Geographic and directed by award-winning directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin follows climber Alex Honnold’s attempt to become the first person to climb 3,000 foot high vertical rock El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes or safety gear.

The production won every award it was nominated for at the ceremony, including outstanding directing for a documentary/nonfiction program, outstanding cinematography, sound editing, sound mixing, picture editing, music composition and best achievement in interactive media.

The documentary which received high ratings from critics including a 98 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, saw a record-breaking box office run that grossed nearly $22 million.
