Video streaming service iFlix to shut down Middle East operations

Malaysia-based iFlix said it’s exiting the region to concentrate on south east Asia market

Video streaming service iFlix has confirmed plans to quit the Middle East, amid fierce competition from local operator Starzplay and global giant Netflix. 

A spokesperson for the Malaysian-based outfit told Arabian Business they were in the process of closing down the entire operation in the region.

A statement said: “iFlix and its partner, Zain, are working together to complete the wind down of the operations in the Middle East to allow iFlix to focus on its core markets in south east Asia.”

The company launched ‘iFlix Arabia’, with Middle East and North Africa mobile and data services operator Zain, in 2017, and set up its regional headquarters for its MENA-based operations in Dubai.

Seen as a rival to Netflix in emerging markets and the region’s leading streaming service provider Starzplay, iFlix operated regionally in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Egypt and Sudan.

It is understood a number of staff have been let go from regional offices.
