Remembering the late Sheikh Rashid

Dubai Ruler’s eldest son will be remembered for his success in the world of sports

His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was born on November 12, 1981 and was the eldest son of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum.

Educated in Dubai at the Rashid School for Boys, he graduated from the UK’s prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy in 2002.

Sheikh Rashid will be best remembered for his contribution to the world of sport. He was appointed President of the Dubai Cultural and Sports Club in 1997 and served as President of the UAE National Olympic Committee from 2008 to 2009.

His passion was for horse riding, for which he won many accolades. He won the 120km Pyramids International Endurance Championship at the Giza pyramids in Egypt and won gold at a 2001 race in Peruggia, Italy.

He shared the top spot in the FEI Emirates Endurance Worldwide Ranking in 2003, while he also won gold in the 120 km endurance race at the 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006 and his achievements meant.

In addition to being a successful sportsman, he also enjoyed great achievements in the business realm through his ownership of Zabeel Stables. He won the UAE Owner’s Championship each year from 2000 to 2005, enjoying 428 wins.

His business interests also included Tesla, Noor Investment Group, Noor Islamic Bank, United Holdings Group Dubai and Dubai Holding Company.

Sheikh Rashid died on the morning of September 19, 2015 after suffering a heart attack. Funeral prayers were held at Zabeel Mosque and his burial was held in Bur Dubai’s Umm Hurair cemetery on Saturday.
