A Saudi national who went missing last week during a trip to Niagara Falls was found dead by Canadian authorities on Friday, according to Saudi media reports.

The man, identified as Qassim Adawi, was reported missing by his wife after failing to return after leaving his car to take photographs of the waterfall.

According to various Saudi newspapers, Canadian authorities have recovered Adawi’s body and confirmed his identity using forensic and biometric tests. He is believed to have drowned after falling into the water on the American side of Niagara Falls.

Adawi, a university student, was on a three-day trip to the area with his wife and three children, aged 8, 10 and 12.

Arab News reported that Saudi consular officials in New York had been in contact with New York State Police as they searched for Adawi and that a witness had reported seeing someone fall into the water.

Prior to the discovery of Adawi’s body, his friends and family had taken to social media to appeal for information using the Arabic language hashtag #NiagaraFallsMissing.

Niagara Falls, which straddles the US-Canada border, is among the world’s most visited tourist attractions and attracts more than 30 million visitors each year.
