The UAE will celebrate the first day of Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday after the country’s moon-sighting committee spotted the crescent moon on Monday evening.
An official announcement in the UAE followed a tweet by the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia that the Eid moon had been sighted.
The sighting of the moon marks the beginning of Eid celebration as well as the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the month of Shawwal.
Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi Al Dhaheri, the UAE’s Minister of Justice, last week issued a decision setting up a moon-sighting committee to detect the beginning of the month of Shawwal.
The committee, chaired by Al Badi, includes senior judiciary officials, religious counsellors and astronomical society members.
