An earthquake has struck the Masafi region in the UAE on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm as residents of the area reported feeling gentle tremors.
The border town between Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah was hit by a 2.1 magnitude tremor 11km deep, according to the National Centre of Meteorology.
However, no injuries or building damages occurred, the centre said.
While the UAE sits on the Arabian tectonic plate, its border with the Eurasian plate which strikes through the Gulf of Oman makes it vulnerable to tremors.
The Arabian plate move northwards at around 3cm a year, and bumpes into the Eurasian plate, which covers a vast strip of Europe and Asia. The area in which they collide has formed the Zagros Mountains and results in instability.
In October, residents in the Northern Emirates suspected an earthquake after hearing an ‘explosion’ sound. They took to social media following the noises heard in RAK and Umm Al Quwain.
However, the National Centre of Meteorology said on its official Twitter account and the sounds had nothing to do with the tremor.
