A 30-year old British nurse died after falling ill while in Dubai for a holiday, according to British media reports.

The BBC identified the victim as Swansea-based Charlotte Carter, who worked for the National Health Service (NHS) in London.

According to the report, she first felt ill while on the flight to Dubai on October 29. Her condition deteriorated while in a taxi on the way to a hotel and she had to be taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

On Facebook, a friend of Carter’s, Kate George – whom Carter was in Dubai to visit – wrote that she “went into cardiac arrest” on the way to her home.

“Charlotte was on the flight messaging me saying she can’t wait to see me and planning our week. She was absolutely fine, even on top form and this happens completely out of the blue,” she wrote. “A tragedy doesn’t even describe what’s happened to our beautiful, witty, charming girl.”

The post adds that Carter didn’t have travel insurance and that “her family now face costs of tens of thousands of pounds to cover medical bills and to bring her body home.”

In response, friends of Carter have set up a crowdfunding page to raise £30,000 (AED 143,765) to pay for the repatriation of Carter’s body. So far, £20,828 (AED 99,811) has been collected.

“Recently we have found out this is how much it will cost to bring her back – obviously this doesn’t include the medical fees, etc, but it’s another important target for us to aim for and to help,” the page reads. “If we do end up raising more money than needed, all extra money will be donated to a mental health charity close to Charlotte’s heart.”
