Dubai Police recovered a 3.27 carat diammond worth $82,000 (AED300,000) in India, just 20 hours after it was stolen from a store in the emirate.
The gem was stolen by an Asian couple in their 40s from a jewellery shop in the Naif area, near Deira, accoording to Dubai Police.
The couple distracted the salesman by asking for specific diamonds, while the woman, who was holding a jacket under her arms, stood near a table and stole the gem and put it in her jacket.
The store owner reported the theft around three hours after it was taken, by which time the couple had boarded a flight to India.
Dubai Police alerted the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) and Indian authorities arrested the couple and brought them back to Dubai.

“The couple was identified in a short time and arrested in transit area in India as they were trying to smuggle the diamond to their home country,” Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, said.
He praised the work of his officers at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who recovered the gem in such a short time after identifying the two suspects.
“It is a new achievement for Dubai known as safe and secure city. Our strategy is to cut crime rate and quick response to emergencies,” Maj General Al Merri added.
