Radars in the UAE’s capital will now be able to read number plates and monitor traffic flow and the number of vehicles in the area, Abu Dhabi Police said.
The radars are equipped with new technology known as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). Unlike regular radars, the flash produced by ANPR is not for catching speed violators.
Motorists, however, are still urged to abide by the new posted speed limits in Abu Dhabi, while drivers can use their smart applications or traffic police websites to check their registered traffic-related violations prior to making a complaint.
Last September, police installed 17 solar-powered speed radars on an accident-prone road in the capital in Ghabat Al Maha Road to Al Ashoosh Road.
The new radars were introduced to reduce traffic violations and accidents on the roads. They were installed to catch motorists who speed, have bad lane discipline and overtake on the hard shoulder.
In August, Abu Dhabi also updated its speed limit signs across the emirate and removed its 20kph speed buffer.
All 4,096 speed signs were been updated with the correct speed limits. The process took 24 hours to complete, with new signs showing speed limits of 120kph, 140kph and 160kph.
Among the notable changes was the speed limit on the Dubai road, around Deerfields Mall, which is now 140kph.
