Qatargas has produced the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its new
train seven plant, the company said on Wednesday.
Royal Dutch Shell owns 30 percent of the 7.8 million tonne a year (mtpa) LNG
plant in Qatar — already the world’s biggest LNG exporter — with state-owned
Qatar Petroleum holding 70 percent.
“This achievement is a significant milestone for the State of Qatar,
where all 14 LNG trains are now producing LNG,” Mohammed Saleh Al Sada,
Qatari energy minister and Qatargas chairman, said in a statement.
Shell said on Feb 3 the first gas was fed into the new LNG production line,
known as a train, in January and that the first cargoes of super-cooled gas
should be loaded in weeks.
Train 7 is the last of four 7.8-mtpa trains constructed by Qatargas, taking
the company’s overall production capacity up to 42 mtpa.
Long-term sales agreements for the LNG have been signed with China and
neighbouring Dubai, but Qatargas is also looking for more buyers to optimise
its sales, the company said.
The LNG produced will be shipped on a fleet of eight ships with capacities
of 210,000-266,000 cubic metres, operated by Nakilat.
