Emirates Central Cooling Systems (Empower) has placed an order for 18 state-of-the-art and energy-efficient water-cooled centrifugal chillers with a total capacity of 56,250 Refrigeration Tons (RT) for its new district cooling projects in Dubai, such as the Deira Waterfront Development, Jumeirah Village, and Al Sufouh.

This was part of the district cooling services provider’s new agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems (MHI Thermal Systems), a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, to supply advanced chillers with a total capacity of up to 100,000 RT.

Apart from the 18 chillers, the agreement also includes a provision allowing Empower to add to the order before 31 December, potentially increasing the total capacity to 100,000 RT.

This is the second agreement between Empower and MHI Thermal Systems after they had signed a previous one in late 2021. At that time, MHI Thermal Systems supplied water-cooled centrifugal chillers with a total capacity of 100,000 RT in 2022 and 2023, which were installed in its  Za’abeel, DLRC, JBH and Business Bay 05 cooling plants.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, emphasised that this deal offers both parties a significant opportunity to advance the district cooling sector and accelerate efforts toward a carbon-free future through energy-efficient solutions.

“These solutions reduce environmental impact and pave the way for a more sustainable tomorrow. It supports Empower’s goal of upgrading its plants with innovative technologies that promote efficient, energy-saving production processes, aligning with the company’s environmental and societal objectives and its commitment to safeguarding resources for future generations,” said Bin Shafar.

Yoshihiro Ito, President of MHI Thermal Systems said his company was committed to maximising energy efficiency while continuously enhancing operational and production effectiveness.

Following the signing of the agreement, Empower hosted the MHI Thermal Systems team for a field tour of the Business Bay district cooling plant, which has achieved the Guinness World Record for the highest capacity district cooling plant.
