Dubai has updated its Demand Side Management Strategy 2050 to boost energy efficiency and push the emirate towards its net zero goals.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, issued Directive No. (1) of 2024 updating the strategy.
The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has been implementing the original 2013 strategy with collaboration from related organisations.
The new strategy aligns with UAE’s net zero aims and Dubai’s Clean Energy targets.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy said: “In line with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote the green economy and sustainable development, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy collaborates with government and private entities to implement the highest standards and mechanisms and best practices in demand side management.
“The Demand Side Management Strategy 2050 aims to establish Dubai as a global benchmark for energy efficiency by doubling efficiency improvements to achieve savings of at least 30 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2050 compared to business as usual in electricity, water use as well as achieving significant savings in transport fuel consumption.”
Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy Ahmed Buti Al Mehairbi noted the strategy “focuses on 7 Implementing Mechanisms: Policies and Regulations; Data and M&V; Government Support and Leadership; Awareness and Recognition; Financing; R&D and Innovation; and Freezone Alignment and Collaboration.”
It aims to deliver electricity savings of at least 86.8 Terawatt Hours and water savings of at least 383.2 Billion Imperial Gallons by 2050 compared to updated 2023 projections.
Transport fuel consumption savings are targeted at over 1,757 million litres by 2050.
The 12 programmes in the updated strategy cover areas like net zero ready buildings, commercial efficiency, distributed energy, efficient mobility and fuel efficiency.
Related entities like DEWA and Dubai Municipality will implement the strategy.
