Sustainability efforts by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) helped reduce carbon emissions by 21 percent in 2021, which overachieved the target of 16 percent set as per the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy 2021 by a whopping 31.25 percent.
This was part of DEWA’s Ninth Sustainability Report 2021, which highlighted its efforts and achievements in supporting sustainable development in all aspects of its operations. It also works as an introduction to all partners, relevant entities and stakeholders to its sustainability practices.
Based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, it highlights DEWA’s commitment to the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which includes human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
It also demonstrates the company’s progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and records its efforts in implementing projects despite the challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said: “DEWA’s annual Sustainability Report reflects our long-term commitment to achieving sustainability and supports His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to consolidate Dubai’s position as a global capital for a green economy.
“DEWA adopts the best international practices as well as sustainable and integrated systems that ensure providing value-added services that meet stakeholders’ expectations. This reflects the importance of sustainability as an indispensable part of DEWA’s strategy and being the centre of its operations and services.”
“We support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100 percent of the emirate’s total power production capacity from clean energy sources through the implementation of world-leading projects.”
The report is divided into nine chapters, each documenting DEWA’s practices in climate change, sustainable development, energy, water, employees, customers, community, and the environment.
