Dubai schools to remain closed on Monday, 16 May, KHDA says following death of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa

The organisation also extended its heartfelt condolences on the passing of Sheikh Khalifa

Schools in Dubai will be remain closed on Monday, 16 May, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which is the educational quality assurance and regulatory authority of the Government of Dubai, announced on Twitter.

The announcement follows news that the President of the UAE Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died at age 73 on Friday.

The KHDA announcement is line with the UAE government’s directives for all public and private establishments to remain closed for three days.

Work will be suspended until Tuesday, 17 May, at all ministries, departments, and federal departments, as well as at local and private entities.

The UAE will observe a forty-day national mourning with the flag flown at half-mast starting today, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced.

Mourning for the late leader has begun, with the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed saying in a tweet: “We belong to God and to Him we shall return. The Emirates lost its righteous son, the leader of the ‘empowerment stage’ and the trustee of its blessed journey.

“His stances, achievements, wisdom, giving, and initiatives (are reflected) in every corner of the country. Khalifa bin Zayed, my brother, my mentor and my teacher, may God have mercy on you with his vast mercy and enter you into his good pleasure and paradise.”

Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed was raised in Al-Ain and became his father’s official representative to the region when the latter became emir in 1966.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed assumed the office of president in 2004 after his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, passed away.
