A new national plan approved by the UAE Cabinet will introduce new sustainability standards for the construction of buildings, roads, and housing.

The new plan aims to preserve resources, reducing the nation’s carbon footprint by 5 percent, followed by reduction of energy requirements in buildings and housing and water consumption by 25 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

Use of materials and natural resources will be reduced by 15 percent whereas the amount of energy and materials taken to build roads will be slashed by 45 percent.

UAE is the first country in the Middle East to implement a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050, in its efforts to combat climate change.

Dubai in particular, has been incorporating sustainable practices in the construction industry for several years.

In addition, the use of 3D printing is also a priority for the nation as the emirate aims to build 25 percent of buildings based on 3D printing.
