Leading construction, engineering and mobility company Egis said it bagged the construction supervision contract for a new metro line work in Alexandria, Egypt, signalling further expansion of its operations in the MENA region.

The contract is to lead on project implementation unit (PIU) support, and construction supervision consulting services for the metro line transformation, extending from Abo Qir to Misr Station in Alexandria.

The line, named Abou Qir Metro, will stretch approximately 22 kilometers from Abo Qir to Misr Station.

Furthermore, the project also aims to transform Alexandria’s existing diesel train service into a modern electric metro system, in partnership with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and Engineering Consultants Group S.A. (ECG).

This is to significantly improve energy efficiency and provide a more efficient and sustainable transportation option for Alexandria residents.

Omar Benzaria, Regional Transportation Director, Egis Middle East & South Asia, said the new Alexandria metro line project represents a significant part of the new trend of the shift towards integrated, sustainable transit solutions.

“This will showcase how innovative engineering and strategic planning can redefine and future-proof urban landscapes,” he said.

Mohamed Ben Messaoud, Country Managing Director for Egis in Egypt, said it was an honour to be the trusted partner of NAT on so many of Egypt’s transportation needs.

The National Authority of Tunnels said partnering with Egis on this transformative metro project forms a cornerstone of its commitment to enhancing urban mobility across Alexandria.

As the lead consultant for the project, Egis, which operates in about 100 countries, including in the MENA region, will assist NAT in effectively managing the project, ensuring all phases are executed as planned.

It will also oversee the contractual aspects of the project, ensuring smooth collaboration between all stakeholders and adherence to contractual obligations, besides providing on-site supervision of the construction activities to guarantee that the project meets the highest quality standards and is delivered on schedule, the company said.
