New Zealand has revealed the concept design for its pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai during a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Wellington today.
The country has committed $53 million to design, construct, operate and promote its presence at the six month event.
The 2,000 square metre pavilion, which will be located in Expo 2020’s Sustainability District, tells the story of the country’s kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, for its people and place.
Designed by Jasmax architects, it features an exhibition space, restaurant, design store and hosting facilities.
It was inspired by waka taonga, carved containers made by Māori, indigenous people of New Zealand, to safeguard items of high value.
They were reportedly gifted to strengthen relationships, create new ones and tell stories of one generation to the next, ultimately bringing people together, a theme that reflects with Expo 2020’s motto of Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.
The UAE will host 180 countries and 25 million visitors in Dubai starting from October 2020.
