Ramadan to begin 2 April, Eid-al-Fitr to be observed on 2 May: Emirates Astronomical Society

The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, has stated that the Holy Month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, 2 April, 2022.

Ramadan in the 1433 Hijri Year is expected to last 30 days, which means that Eid al-Fitr will be observed on Thursday, 2 May, 2022 in the UAE, the state-run news agency, Wam, confirmed.

Ramadan – which is the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar and is recognised as a time when Muslims across the globe focus on fasting, prayer, pilgrimage, charity, and devotion – commemorates the month when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.

The easternmost point of the UAE in the city of Khor Fakkan in the Emirate of Sharjah – specifically at Shark Island near Khor Fakkan Port – will mark the start of fasting and breakfast about eight minutes ahead of the capital of Abu Dhabi.

Similarly, the westernmost points of the UAE – Al Ghuwaifat and Al Sila – will mark the start of fasting and breakfast approximately 12 minutes after Abu Dhabi.

“The dawn call to prayer in Khor Fakkan will be at 04:48, while in the capital, Abu Dhabi, it will be at 04:56, and in Al Sila and Ghuwaifat it will be at 05:08,” Al Jarwan said.

Usually, the exact date for the start of Ramadan in the UAE is announced by the UAE’s official moon-sighting committee who look for the first sighting of the new crescent moon.

What are the working hours during Ramadan?

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has already announced that working hours for private-sector employees during Ramadan will be reduced by two hours each day.

All private sector entities operating in the country are required to comply with its provisions, the ministry said in a circular.

Meanwhile, the official working hours for Ministry employees and federal government employees during Ramadan in 2022.

The working hours for federal authorities will be from 9:00am to 02:30pm, from each Monday to Thursday during Ramadan, and from 9:00am to 12:00 noon on Fridays.
