A 30-year-old Indian man, who grew up in the UAE, has been shot dead in a petrol station robbery in the USA.
Neil Kumar, whose family live in Sharjah, was working part-time at the garage in Pike County, Alabama, when the attack took place last Wednesday morning shortly after 6am.
According to various news reports, a masked gunman burst into the attached mini-supermarket and fired at Kumar at point-blank range before making off with a small amount of cash.
Moses Davenport, chief of police in the city of Brundidge, said: “After reviewing the camera system we saw…a male person entered the store with their hand gun, pointed at the clerk and went behind the counter.
“And, apparently, he [the gunman] just got aggravated because the clerk seemed to be very cooperative, and he shot him.”
Originally from India, Kumar’s parents, Kumar Purushu and his wife Seema, have lived in Sharjah for most of their lives, according to a report in Khaleej Times.
The couple’s three children, including Kumar, went to school in Dubai. Kumar’s two sisters have both since settled in America.
Kumar was enrolled at Troy University where he was studying for a masters degree in computer science.
Police have yet to catch the suspect, who was dressed entirely in black but wearing white gloves.
