A majority of UAE motorcycle delivery riders believe motorists put them in danger, according to a new study conducted by RoadSafetyUAE and Al-Futtaim Honda.
The first-of-its kind study found that 78 percent of delivery riders’ noted that other motorists don’t properly indicate, making it difficult to anticipate their moves, with another 77 percent noting that other vehicles cut in front or behind them.
A total of 222 riders from four UAE motorcycle fleets participated in the survey.
Of the riders queried, 68 percent said that other cars and vehicles often behave inconsiderately on the UAE’s roads, while the same percentage saying that other vehicles do not see them properly. More than half (56 percent) of riders noted that other motorcycle deliver riders put them in danger as well.
“Motorcycle riders are amongst the most vulnerable road users and hence it is important to understand their perceptions and fears in order to work on improvement potentials,” said RoadSafetyUAE Managing Director Thomas Edelmann. “Educational efforts must be directed at motorists in cars and heavy vehicles to show a respectful and caring attitude towards delivery riders.”
Additionally, the survey found that a vast majority – 94 percent – of drivers said that they believe they know exactly what their company expects from them, while 92 percent said that they believe they are safe drivers. A total of 19 percent reported having been in an accident in the last 12 months.
Lastly, 91 percent of riders said that were happy with the initial training they received upon joining their company, while 86 percent said they were satisfied with the ongoing training they’ve received.
