A flying object observed over the UAE skies last night as been identified as a meteor, aviation officials have confirmed.
Residents in the reported sightings of the object around 7pm yesterday evening, with some speculating on social media channels that it might be a satellite.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), however, confirmed that object was a meteor that penetrated the Earth’s atmosphere.
Meteor sightings are a common occurrence at this time of year, as meteor showers become active during this period, peaking by October 20, the GCAA statement said.

Meteors are big metal rock matter from outer space that enter into the earth’s atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction. They appear as a streak of light as they burn completely in the atmosphere, sometimes reaching Earth, and causing a collision.
