Dubai Civil Defence is introducing new drones to help monitor and respond to fires and other emergencies in the emirate.

A video tweeted by the Dubai Media Office shows a large, six-rotor drone being dispatched to the scene of a high-rise fire in Dubai.

According to American technology company Avaya – which is providing video solutions for the DCD drones – the drones are capable of providing a live image feed to DCD headquarters, as well as to mobile devices.

“One of our key responsibilities to the public is to remain fully alert while managing our resources effectively and efficiently in facing emergency situations,” said Colonel Ali Hassan Al Mutawa, assistant director of DCD’s Smart Services department.

“By collecting real-time video information faster ad sharing that intelligence across more channels, we are better able to help Dubai progress towards its goal of becoming the happiest city in the world and achieve its Smart Vision goals,” he added.

DCD officials added that the sophisticated thermal sensors of the drones can be used to detect improperly stored chemicals in warehouses and factories that are often prone to fires.
