Sheikh Zayed Road, one of the busiest roads in the UAE, will be closed to traffic on Sunday morning as thousands of cyclists join a Dubai Fitness Challenge event.

The Dubai Ride is scheduled to start at 5am and lasts until 7.45am.

To manage the safety of cyclists and keep the roads clear, however, the RTA said road closures will begin at 4am on Sunday, November 6 and last until 9am on the same day.

The RTA is advising Dubai’s drivers to use some of the city’s other most popular roads to get to their destinations.

With Sheikh Zayed Road closing in both directions, the RTA has advised cyclists to follow diversions and look to use alternative routes such as Al Wasl Street, Al Khail Road, Meydan Street, Al Asayel Street, Zabeel Street, 2nd December Street and Al Hadika Street, to reach their destination.

Sheikh Zayed road transformed

Sheikh Zayed Road, one of the busiest roads in the country will be closed to traffic as hundreds of cyclists join the event.

The Dubai Ride event will see hundreds of cyclists get on their bikes and ride past landmarks such as the Dubai Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers and more of the city’s iconic skyscrapers.

The Dubai Ride is a free event, but participants must register in advance at the official website.

Two routes are available to cyclists, including a 12km Sheikh Zayed Road circuit. The 12km Sheikh Zayed Road route goes from Dubai World Trade Centre to Safa Park and back. It includes a climb over the Dubai Canal Bridge so is suitable for more experienced cyclists.

Last month the RTA said it will introduce smart technology to save lives and cut travel times on Dubai roads.
