Dubai-based mountaineer Dolores Shelleh has become the first Arab (Jordanian) woman – and the second Serbian – to scale Mt. Everest from its North Col terrain, which boasts altitude challenges for climbers and a high fatality rate due to the elevation of camps and lack of helicopter rescue options.
Shelleh said her climb intended to highlight sustainable practices, promote the use of renewable energy and reinforce the need to follow healthy lifestyles.
The sportswoman was also the first Arab to summit Mount Manaslu in the Himalayas, and the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8,156 meters above sea level. Due to the risk of avalanches, it is regarded as the fourth most dangerous for climbers.
The Jordanian had also climbed the Mera Peak in Nepal at 6,476 metres, Africa’s highest peak Mt. Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres above sea level and Europe’s highest mountain Mt. Elbrus at 5,642 metres above sea level.
Shelleh’s journey was supported by The Sustainable City, the world’s first fully sustainable community built by Diamond Developers and located in Dubai. The climber works closely with the community to raise awareness for the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals including climate change, sustainable cities and communities, and gender equality.
